This was originally just going to be a quick self-playing scenario, but I figured that since adding simple movement and exploration made
Bunny Farm
much more interesting, I’d try that here too. To speed things up, and out of nostalgia, I copied the map layout from an old Macintosh game The Quest of Yipe 3.
#
That turned out to be a mistake. My game didn’t have combat or treasure hunting, and those maps were specifically designed for that. After almost a year I just had a game where the player wandered through a bunch of empty dungeon rooms looking for the interesting scene at the end. So I decided to add gameplay to make it interesting. That’s right, after finishing the story and maps, that’s when I starting figuring out the gameplay. This entire thing was designed backwards.
#
But in the end, I think I managed to make something fairly fun. This “little” project almost took 2 years to make. It would have been faster if I planned it better and made the maps from scratch. I ended up replacing or heavily modifying most of the maps anyway.

This is the first game where I’ve attempted to post a play-by-play
development log
during its creation to show most of the challenges and design decisions while making this game. If I programmed my website right, you should see an “Updates” tab with ALL of those posts in it.

The dev log was inspired by reading Eevee’s tweets about her attempts at adding physics to her game Fox Flux, and seeing her impressive particle-based screen transition effect. Reading these was hilarious and fascinating. I realized that if I enjoy this kind of thing, then maybe other people might find behind-the-scenes posts about my games interesting.
#
But when it comes to tweets, I have a rule. Every update post should have a picture. Why? Because words look boring and pictures look interesting. People don’t read about words, they read about pictures.
#
But pictures take time, and now I have a huge backlog of things I haven’t posted yet. I finished the game before I finished posting about it… I finished a two year game before I finished talking about it.

Aaaaanyway… updates.
