The game just wouldn’t be complete without a scene with the bug. And when I was trying to figure out what pose to use for this picture, I was surprised when I realized that I hadn’t shown penetration at this angle yet. This seems like such an obvious pose to use in retrospect. Then while looking for reference material for this pose I stumbled across two pictures… two amazing pictures! The first picture was an animated parody of Arriety. It was so perfect for this picture that I considered doing an exact tracing of it and turning it into Marle. But then I saw this second picture drawn by Fluf Dustbunny and… Dat pose! My god, that pose. This guy wins the internet. Nothing can top that pose! So I stitched together a composite reference image from the various pictures, sketching-in and altering details as needed.

When I shaded this picture, I decided to try an experiment. I started by shading all of the ambient occlusion first, and then on a separate layer I added the normal volumetric shading on top of it. Holy cow, the results were epic! And because of the way I blended the layers, all of the shading flowed together seamlessly. I also finally managed to avoid making the picture too dark by starting the shading at a brighter 60% gray instead of neutral 50% gray, and then shading the picture darker from there like I’m traditionally used to.
