This is a sprite of Misty in the style of Toshihiro Ono

Xierra099 drew a picture of Misty in the style of the first Pokemon manga, Electric Tale of Pikachu, by Ono Toshihiro. And that got me inspired to try it too.

I will always be thankful to Toshihiro Ono for laying the spicy groundwork of Misty’s sexy design. Somehow, no amount of outfit revisions over the years ever managed to fully keep her design from working. The hallmark of art operating at a level too deep to ever be silenced.

But I haven’t drawn anything by hand in a very long time. I’m rusty. So I figured I’d try imitating that manga’s style… as a sprite! And of course a black and white manga should be represented as a black and white sprite, so I decided to make this 1-bit, like an old Macintosh. No color, not even grays. The same limitations as ink. Making a 1-bit sprite makes me really appreciate the effect of adding ink-shadows. Of course I didn’t want to just copy one of Toshihiro’s drawings… so I copied multiple drawings, by combining together many frames of Misty. A fun pose, a fun expression, and his signature boobs. All of my favorite parts!

But I was also inspired by another artist. Masayume often makes 1-bit sprites with a neat style. So I thought I’d try to capture some of his style too. Unfortunately striped dithering tended to mess up the shapes in my picture so I stuck with a checkerboard. But I like the slight sepia-tone he uses.
