Another one of my “window sitter” ideas was to put sally in this awesome pose, drawn by Furball about a million years ago on the DigiArtist’s Domain website. It’s still one of my favorite pictures.
#
I’ll use the same technique as last time. But there will be more overlapping parts this time.
#
#
We’ll need a different head to turn it into Sally. Let’s see if I can find any good references in my vast Picasa collection.
#
#
Now to fill in the shapes and resize it. The sprite is going to be 64 pixels high so I’ll resize this to 128 pixels.
#
The anti-aliasing made things tricky last time. But Photoshop doesn’t let me resize vectors with nearest-neighbor, so let’s try posturizing to reduce the colors of each layer. This gets pretty close to aliased pixels.
#
Hmm… that arm on the right isn’t really going where it needs to go. She’s supposed to be fingering herself.
#
It will make things a lot easier if I figure out the palette ahead of time.
#
Outlining is still going to be tricky with those stray pixels. I’ll just do my best and clean it up later.
#
It’s best to start outlining the objects in front first, and then outline the stuff behind them afterwards.
#
Even at this size, the overlapping pussy is pretty detailed, so I’m going to have to trust my instincts instead of just outlining the pixels I see.
#
#
The problem with being a dirty cheater is that it actually makes things harder. This head is blurry everywhere, so there’s going to be a lot of guesswork and manual adjustment.
#
Let’s just try to place the color areas.
#
#
Okay, I’ve finished tracing er, planning my totally original piece of art.
#
Time to get rid of the reference picture and start the clean-up and manually adding details.
#
I’ve been saving the brightest color for shading.
#
I’ll scribble in a temporary guideline to figure out where the ribcage ends. The shading can do the rest.
#
#
I kind of wish I added more colors to the palette. I can only do very simple shading with these. It’s not necessarily a problem. I’m just used to going into more detail.
#
Another guideline to plan where the kneecaps are.
#
#
The “Kirby” look isn’t doing it for me. She needs more contrast.
#
Now the fun part. Let’s detail these tits! Shade the curves… add some subtle drop shadows.
#
Fix the hair. Shade the face. Wrestle with her whiskers for a solid 10 minutes.
#
#
I intentionally made things darker when they go behind other things, so the only color left for shading the feet is the outline color. We’ll just have to settle for “comic book” shading here.
#
Compared to the original pose.
#
And here’s a time-lapse video of this sprite being made.
