I’ve been trying to kick my bad habit of tracing stuff. This time I only roughed out a very approximate pose and then set aside the composite picture to look at as actual reference for once. The results ended up being fantastic! I’m starting to feel more confident as an artist. It feels good to finally stand on my own feet again… now I just need to keep it up.

I’m also overdue to record a time-lapse. My sprite-making technique has shifted in recent months. Now I use a rough sketch and inking technique similar to normal digital art, and then trace the “ink lines” to make my sprite. I always suspected that large pixel-art would tend to benefit from traditional art techniques.

I just noticed a weird bilinear scaling quirk to watch out for.
Going even 1 pixel above 50% scale makes the lines look choppy.
50% is fine. Anything smaller than 50% is fine.
51% is NOT.

I should make a habit of drawing more. Maintain the habit, maintain the confidence it brings. Wait too long and I worry it might slip away again. It’s not a particularly good reason. Purely emotional and motivated by fear. But there is a sense of accomplishment as well. Hard to reject that. And maybe just a tiny bit of jealousy too. My favorite artists have been drawing for years and I want to be more like them. If nothing else I aspire to make more original art and decorate my games with my own art instead of someone else’s. And including more art in the games would improve them as well. So why not? Let’s keep the ball rolling and make a habit of this.
